Snorkeling with Whale Sharks in Mexico between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, with Planet Scuba Mexico

Every summer, between mid May and mid September, the shallow waters of the Yukatan peninsula warm up and attract the life source for the biggest fish in our oceans – the whale shark. Specific currents, reef formation and water temperature all contribute to the concentration level of plankton in the water. Each year between May and September conditions around Isla Mujeres are ideal for one of the world’s highest concentration of plankton. And with the plankton come the Whale Sharks, sometimes hundreds of them at a time!

With Planet Scuba Mexico you get to see and snorkel with the whale shark, the enormous but harmless biggest fish in the world!

Snorkeling with whale sharks in Mexico: trip details

Planet Scuba Mexico offers this breathtaking snorkeling experience which you should not miss. Diving is strictly prohibited around the whale shark grounds as it is a protected marine park and to keep human interference to a minimum.

Our partner has nearly 10 years of experience running Whale Shark Adventure Tours. This departs from Cancun daily during the whale shark season.

All the tours have a limit of 10 persons and are all guided by certified and professional guides who are naturalists and biologists and know all about the area and the whale sharks.

During the whale shark season the whale sharks will come to Isla Contoy to feed. Isla Contoy National park is located 30 km north of Isla Mujeres where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico.

The island has, because of its rich nutrients of the surrounding waters that support abundant plankton, a large variety of more than 200 species of fish in the area, including manta rays and whale sharks.

You will be picked up at Planet Scuba Mexico early in the morning to allow as much time as possible with the magnificent whale sharks before you are brought back to your hotel or apartment.
